Gold Prospecting

1. Create a list of equipment used for gold panning. Describe each item and tell what it is used for. The list should include at least the following.

  1. Gold Pan
  2. Classifier
  3. Snuffer Bottle
  4. Shovel
  5. Pick
  6. Bucket
  7. Trowel
  8. Pry bar
  9. Rock hammer
  10. Crevice Tool
  11. Drinking Water

2. Define the following:

  1. Pay Dirt
  2. Quartz
  3. Pyrite
  4. Blond Sand
  5. Black Sand
  6. Placer
  7. Lode
  8. Nugget
  9. Flake
  10. Dust
  11. Specific Gravity
  12. Wet and Dry Panning
  13. Gold Fever
  14. Troy Pound
  15. Troy Ounce
  16. Penny weight(dwt)
  17. Grain
  18. Mercury (historical use) DO NOT USE TODAY

3. What are the following identifying characteristics of Gold.

  1. Specific Gravity
  2. Color of streak
  3. Color

4. Where are some good places on a river or stream to look for gold?
5. Make a timeline containing at least 15 items about the history of gold prospecting from 1600 until the present day, including the following rushes: California Gold Rush, Klondike/Yukon Gold Rush, Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the Victorian Gold Rush.
6. Learn about gold panning by doing one of thefollowing:

  1. Do some gold panning. (preferred).
  2. Practice panning using flattened lead or tungsten shot mixed with sand (preferably from a river bank).

7. Look up the following verses in the Bible and discuss them in relation to prospecting for gold.

  1. Matthew 13:44-46
  2. Matthew 6:19-21

2. Describe the following types of prospecting equipment.

  1. Sluice box
  2. Rocker box
  3. High banker
  4. Bucket dredge
  5. Suction dredge

  7. Trommel
  8. Beach box
  9. Metal detector
  10. Jig
  11. Shaker table

3. Pospect for gold using at least two of the types of equipment listed in number 2 above to?
4. What government requirements, if any, are thereto use the equipment used for number 3 above?
5. What are the advantages or disadvantages of the equipment listed in number 2 above.
6. Pathfinders are supposed to take only pictures and leaveonly footprints, but prospecting requires moving rocks and digging large holes. How can you reconcilethese two conflicting requirements?
