En 1863 cuando la Iglesia Adventista fue organizada los miembros y líderes reconocieron que el sistema organizacional de la iglesia fue inspirada por Dios. Pero para la década de1890 la iglesia estaba casi dividida por conflictos internos sobre quien tenía la autoridad de como se llevaba a cabo el ministerio de las iglesias.

Muchas personas, entre ellas Elena G. de White, pensaban que el problema principal era que la Conferencia General tenía demasiada autoridad sobre las conferencias y congregaciones locales, y que las iglesias, tenían muy poca autoridad sobre las escuelas, las casas publicadoras, los hospitales y las misiones. En respuesta a la petición de Elena G. de White, los cambios organizacionales del 1901 pusieron a la estructura de la iglesia de cabeza. Estos cambios establecieron departamentos (de salud, educación, Escuela Sabática, publicación, etc.) y conferencias autónomas de las uniones.

Al finalizar la sesión de 1901, Elena White declare que “Los ángeles de Dios han estado caminando entre esta congregación. Quiero que cada uno de ustedes lo recuerde y quiero que también recuerden que Dios ha dicho que él sámara las heridas de su pueblo”.

En el libro ¿Quién dirige la iglesia? Gerry Chudleigh describe la autoridad asignada a cada uno de los niveles de la iglesia en la actualidad —Conferencia General, divisiones, uniones, conferencias locales y congregaciones—. Chudleigh observa la estructura original para ver por qué no ha tenido éxito, luego detalla cómo puede solucionarse el problema y recuperarse la harmonía. Finalmente, repasa los procesos por medio de los cuáles la autoridad de la iglesia se ha vuelto gradualmente más centralizada desde 1901.

En adición a otros aspectos interesantes en este libro, Chudleigh examina el contexto de la declaración de Elena de White en 1875 en la que declara que la Conferencia General es la máxima autoridad que Dios tiene sobre la tierra, hace una revisión de su frustración debido a las personas que citan esa declaración “o’er and o’er and o’er again” para prevenir el cambio y describe su actitud cambiante hacia la autoridad centralizada.

Acerca del autor

Gerry Chudleigh se graduó de las universidades de La Sierra y Andrews y se ha desempeñado como pastor y director de jóvenes de la conferencia por 18 años. Luego desempeñó el cargo de vicepresidente del departamento de marketing y comunicaciones en el Pacific Living Centers, una división de Salud Adventista, también desempeñó el cargo de director y gerente de Faith for Today y también como director asociado del Church Resources Consortium (CRC) para la División Norteamericana.
